TURNER — MSAD 52 Adult & Community Education has announced upcoming classes for October.
Get Your Apple On: Monday, Oct. 3. Attendees can unlock the mystery of their iPad or iPhone, and learn to use it for more than games. They will discover how the devices can improve productivity, organization, and possibly replace desktop or laptop computers. Attendees must have their own personal iPad in order to install required free apps.
Essential Oils: Tuesday, Oct. 4. Attendees will learn how essential oils can be incorporated into their everyday lives, from cleaning to cooking to supporting the body’s immune system.
Map, Compass & GPS Basics: Wednesday, Oct. 5. This class will help attendees discover essential information on the use of maps, compass and GPS skills. It will reinforce mapping skills and compass knowledge. Recommendations for compasses are given in the first week of class, but those attending may bring their own.
BBQ Basics & Birds: Saturday, Oct. 8. Attendees will create their own rubs and sauces with different regional styles and flavors. They will use a variety of smoking methods to prepare mouth-watering smoked chicken thighs and a whole chicken. They will also sample other styles of barbecued birds. Options for chicken, turkey and game birds will be discussed. Attendees can make traditional barbecue sides to enjoy with the end of the day feast.
Budgeting Basics Workshop: Tuesday, Oct. 11. Attendees will explore the basic components of building a budget. Topics include: money tracking, goal setting, challenges, ways to reduce expenses and how understanding their overall financial situation can be helpful in managing their money and creating goals that work.
Beyond the Point & Shoot Camera: Tuesday, Oct. 11. This course will cover the four modes of a digital single lens reflex camera with interchangeable lens. The different modes will be discovered as well as auto focus and difficult situations. Attendees should bring their camera and manual to class.
Sea Glass Earrings: Wednesday, Oct. 12. Attendees can make matching wire-tapped earrings using pre-drilled cultured sea glass available in a variety of colors.
Beginning to Stay at Home Alone: Thursday, Oct. 13. This class will prepare children ages 8 to 11 to stay at home alone through activities, games and puzzles developed by the Maine Safety Education.
Chakradance Intro: Thursday, Oct. 13. This self-discovery tool includes a spontaneous dance to music, guided imagery, and mandela art. Those attending should dress comfortably and bring water and an open mind.
Beef, Pork & Other Tasty Critters: Saturday, Oct. 15. This course will help attendees practice smoking beef, roasts and short ribs, burgers and brisket. Attendees will explore the options available for the many cuts of beef, as well as variations on pork. They will discover the 3-2-1 method for smoking southern-style spare ribs. Coleslaw and corn bread will be made.
