REGIONAL – Taylor Renee Ouellette of Turner has been awarded the Diane E. Curtis Medical Scholarship.
Ouellette, a junior studying biology at the University of Maine in Orono in pursuit of a medical career, was presented the Diane E. Curtis Medical Scholarship by Tom Curtis of Norway to honor his late wife Diane.
Diane succumbed to metastatic breast cancer in early 2014 after she and her husband Tom converted their vacation home in Norway to a year-round retirement home. Diane worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers in their consulting business and then with IBM before retiring to Norway where she became part business owner with two women in an established Norway business.
The $1,000 scholarship was started in 2014 and is given annually to a deserving student in either Oxford County (where Diane lived) or Androscoggin County (where Diane was treated) who wishes to pursue a career in the medical field.
The recipient of this scholarship must complete an application form discussing what community and volunteering activities in which he or she is or has been involved, what leadership qualities he or she has displayed, a transcript of high school or college grades, at least two letters of recommendation, and the reasons behind the applicant’s decision to pursue a medical career.
Curtis said the Scholarship Committee found Ouelette to possess those qualities that the committee members were seeking and she met all of the application requirements. Ouellette will be receiving the check for the scholarship amount once she forwards her first semester grades from college next winter to the scholarship committee.
