NORWAY — A local man has been arrested on felony charges after police said he hit and strangled his girlfriend.

Wayne Scott Brown, 59, of Hayes Road was arrested on Nov. 25 and charged with aggravated assault, domestic violence assault, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and obstructing the reporting of a crime.

Brown allegedly entered his girlfriend’s home on Watson Road, where he pushed, struck and strangled the victim, according to an officer with the Norway Police Department.

Brown was reportedly upset that the victim had not given him a ride home from Wal-Mart, appeared intoxicated during the assault and attempted to prevent the victim from calling police.

Police said the victim was able to lock Brown outside of the home and phone emergency personnel while he packed some of his belongings.

Police eventually found him at his camp on Ashton Road in Norway around 7 p.m. the next day.

Though prohibited from possessing firearms, Brown may have used a hunting rifle found at the residence, according to police.

He is being held at the Oxford County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $50,000 surety and is expected to appear in court on Dec. 3.
