- A Bancroft Contracting Corp. crew watches a worker try to shovel frozen ground Friday morning to reach a leachate pipe-main break under Route 2 in Mexico after a Swasey Excavation excavator dug down near the pipe. The pipe runs between a waste landfill on Farrington Mountain in Mexico and the Catalyst Paper mill in Rumford. Mexico Water District Superintendent Jim White said it was initially thought to be a water main break when someone saw water surfacing. But on investigation, White said it was a wastewater pipe break. A Bancroft worker said a Maine Department of Environmental Protection official was en route to investigate. Frost this winter has gone 4½ to 5½ feet below some town roads, making line-digging work difficult, White said. After the westbound lane was closed, traffic was rerouted around the dig via turning lanes at the Walmart intersection.
