GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Bates College senior thrower Jesse Carney earned All-America honors Friday in the weight throw.
Carney placed eighth in the Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships with a toss of 57 feet, 1 inch. Nick Eschenbach of Wisconsin-Stevens Point won the gold medal by throwing the weight 62-5.
Carney was Bates’ lone male competitor at nationals.
Softball
St. Joseph’s wins pair
CAPE CORAL Fla. – St. Joseph’s improved their record to 4-6 with a pair of wins Monday in Florida.
The Monks slipped past Hiram College 7-5 and dumped Wesleyan 9-3.
Kristen Gaudette slapped out three hits, including the game’s only home run, plating three RBIs against Hiram.
Kahler Dowling (2-3) fired a complete game, scattering nine hits in the nightcap, while Courtney Sirois banged out three hits.
Bates drops pair
SALISBURY, Md. – The Bates softball team opened its season with a pair of losses Friday. The Bobcats dropped a 2-1 pitchers’ duel to Lynchburg before falling 12-8 to Cabrini.
In the opener, Krissie Whiting’s RBI single gave Bates a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Lynchburg tied the game in the fifth and scored the winning run in the seventh. Losing pitcher Sarah Klenakis allowed five hits and one earned run.
Erin Foye, Cami Dyson, Andrea Lichtman and Sarah Levine all had two hits for the Bobcats in the nightcap.

Bates 14, UNE 6
LEWISTON – Lori Jessup, Erin Culbreth and Carrie Smith scored three goals apiece to lead the Bates women to a 14-6 win over UNE in the Bobcats’ home opener.
