MONTREAL – Martin Brodeur made 25 saves for his eighth shutout this season, and Scott Gomez scored a power-play goal in the first period to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night.
Brodeur preserved his 63rd career shutout and 37th win of the season by making a sprawling stop to rob Saku Koivu during a third-period power play.
Gomez scored the game’s only goal 5:59 in as New Jersey won its second in three games after winning just once in its previous five (1-3-0-1).
The Devils, who lost to the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday, moved into sole possession of first in the Atlantic Division with 93 points. They are two points ahead of the Flyers, who lost 5-2 in Buffalo on Tuesday.
Senators 6, Hurricanes 5
RALEIGH, N.C. – Jason Spezza had two goals, and Wade Redden added a goal and an assist as the Ottawa Senators became the first NHL team to reach 100 points with a 6-5 victory Tuesday night over the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Eastern Conference’s highest-scoring team needed all it could get after another shaky performance by goalie Patrick Lalime, who made 20 saves as Ottawa broke a two-game losing streak. He has allowed 16 goals in the last three games.
The Senators are 6-0-2 over the past two seasons against the Hurricanes.
Red Wings 5, Penguins 1
PITTSBURGH – Sergei Fedorov scored a twice in the third period and Brendan Shanahan added a goal and two assists Tuesday night in the Detroit Red Wings’ 5-1 victory over the free-falling Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Penguins are winless in 13 games (0-12-1), the second-longest streak in team history. They are also winless in nine home games (0-8-1).
Fedorov, who has six goals in seven games, also added an assist as Detroit remained atop the Western Conference and just two points behind Ottawa for the NHL points lead.
Sabres 5, Flyers 2
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Maxim Afinogenov scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the second period as the Buffalo Sabres beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 Tuesday night.
Sabres coach Lindy Ruff passed Scotty Bowman with his franchise-record 211th win.
Jochen Hecht and James Patrick added insurance goals, and J.P. Dumont and Daniel Briere also scored for Buffalo, which broke an 0-2-1-1 skid. Ruff is 211-201-70 in six years with Buffalo. Bowman was 210-134-60. John LeClair and Tony Amonte scored for Philadelphia, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.
Maple Leafs 3, Islanders 3
TORONTO – Dave Scatchard scored New York’s third goal of the third period with 2:35 left in regulation as the Islanders rallied for a 3-3 tie with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night.
Owen Nolan scored twice for the Maple Leafs, who couldn’t hold leads of 2-0 and 3-2. Nolan has five goals in five games since being acquired from San Jose on March 5.
Adrian Aucoin, Arron Asham also scored for the Islanders, who lost 1-0 to the New York Rangers on Monday. Rick DiPietro made 27 saves, including a couple of impressive stops on Mats Sundin and Nolan in overtime.
Blues 6, Canucks 4
ST. LOUIS – Peter Cajanek and Eric Boguniecki scored 40 seconds apart in the third period, leading the St. Louis Blues to a 6-4 victory Tuesday night over the Vancouver Canucks.
Boguniecki pulled the Blues even at 4 with a power-play goal at 3:35 of the third period. The puck came to Boguniecki at the side of the net after a shot by Dallas Drake bounced off a Vancouver defenseman.
He scored into an open net.
Cajanek scored his second goal of the game 40 seconds later on a deflected wrist shot from the top of the slot, putting St. Louis ahead for the first time at 5-4.
Scott Mellanby finished the scoring with his second goal, into an empty net, with 45 seconds remaining.
