LEWISTON — A free money management and personal finances class, “Money Smart,” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, April 3 to May 1, at the Hillview Resource Center, Rideout Street.

Thursday, April 3, “Where Are You Now?” Participants will outline current expenses and sources of income, identify “good” and “bad” debts and savings, order a credit history and Social Security statement and test money personality.

Thursday, April 10, “Where Do You Want to be?” Class members will open their imagination to what “could be” and identify financial goals for the family, discuss the benefits and drawbacks of different assets, the cost of credit and the benefit of maintaining a positive credit history. Learn what is ”enough.”

Thursday, April 17, “How to Get There.” Match goals with the budget and begin to create an action plan. discuss saving strategies, account upkeep, record keeping and credit card payoff strategies Create a new spending and saving plan that incorporates goals.

Thursday, April 24, “Borrowing Basics.” Learn how to read a credit report, correct errors and build credit. Learn about compounding interest, types of loans, how get the best credit card and manage it wisely and how much debt is too much.

Thursday, May l, “Taxes and Insurance.” Participants will learn how to protect what they have, who they care about and how they live. They will investigate types of insurance and how to choose among the products. The class will get basic tax information. including how to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Care Tax Credit.
