LEWISTON — “Fit and Fun,” a Horizons/55 exercise program, will be offered beginning Tuesday, April 1, at the Senior Information Center at the Lewiston Mall.

Certified exercise instructor Marcy Covey will lead a series of exercise classes that will focus on low-impact aerobics, strengthening, stretching and flexibility. The class will be offered from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on April 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24 and 29.

A fee will be charged. Physician consent is required and a release waiver must be signed.

Other programs offered during the month will include the following:

“Hormone Replacement Therapy” from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9. Dr. Michael Drouin, a gynecologist with the Women’s Health Center, will discuss a recent study assessing the pros and cons of hormone replacement therapy. His presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.

The program is free.

“Score For Health” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 10, jointly sponsored by Horizons/55 and the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute at the information center.

Participants will have the opportunity to undergo a screening for total cholesterol, HDL and blood pressure. An individual consultation to review results will also be offered.

Horizons/55, in association with the American Association of Retired Persons, will offer a refresher course for older drivers.

“Mature Driving,” a classroom refresher course for people who are 55 years of age or older, will be presented from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, April 15 and 16. There will be a $10 fee.

The course, developed by the AARP, helps older drivers understand physical changes that can affect their driving, and provides them with information that can help them compensate for those changes. It covers rules of the road, local driving problems and license renewal requirements.

Ron Fazio will serve as instructor.

“Keeping the Beat: Staying Heart Healthy” from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24. Registered nurse Barbara Aliberti, Horizons/55 manager, will discuss the basic anatomy of the heart and how individuals can better manage their cardiac disease risk factors.

The program is free.

“A Work of Art” from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30. Leon LaRoche will guide participants step-by-step through the process of developing a work of art, this time a wilderness scene. Those joining the program will leave with a finished painting.

The program fee will cover the cost of all materials.
