The campaign will end on the International Noise Awareness Day on April 30.

LEWISTON — As the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council wraps up its noise pollution awareness campaign, it will recognize the eighth annual International Noise Awareness Day on April 30 through a poster contest for kindergarten through grade three Lewiston students.

The winning entry will be chosen based on how well the contents encourage residents to assist in preventing loud noise, such as excessively loud car stereos and amplified exhaust systems, and the importance of being courteous to neighbors.

Ranging in initiatives from taping a noise pollution awareness video to the group’s recent community forum on the subject, council members have strived to enhance the public’s knowledge of existing laws addressing noise and the importance of protecting one’s hearing. The group’s efforts have received inquiries from as far away as Guntersville, Ala., to Brunswick.

Posters may be submitted to Lewiston City Hall, c/o City Administrator’s Office, 27 Pine St., Lewiston, ME 04240, by no later than April 15. The student who submits the winning entry will receive a $50 award compliments of a grant funding the council received from the United Way of Androscoggin County.
