DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Historical Society will host its first spring meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the museum house. The program is Whatchamacallit Night. People are being asked to bring a favorite antique or a mystery item to display. New acquisitions will be shown and refreshments served. The public is invited.

Education fair

NEWRY – The 13th annual Post Secondary Fair will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10, in the grand ballroom at the Grand Summit Hotel of Sunday River.

Approximately 100 colleges, military recruiters and FAME representatives are expected attend the fair, which is for area high school students. Last year, 14 high schools from Maine and New Hampshire attended the fair. Guidance counselors from the Mountain Valley, Dirigo, Telstar and Region 9 high schools are hosting the fair as part of the Northern Oxford County Area Counselors group.

Soldier pictures

DIXFIELD – The town will be displaying pictures of soldiers from Dixfield who are currently serving in the U.S. armed forces. Pictures will be displayed on the Bicentennial Bulletin Board throughout the year. People who have a son or daughter in the service or know of another Dixfield resident who does are being asked to take a picture and details of his or her service to the Town Office for display.

Author to visit

DIXFIELD – Maine children’s book author Lynn Plourde will do a presentation at Dixfield Elementary School beginning 9:10 a.m. Friday, April 11. During an open assembly, Plourde will present an interactive reading of some of her picture books “Pigs in the Mud in the Middle of the Road,” “Wild Child,” “School Picture Day” and “Moose, of Course!”

She’ll lead students in a dramatization of one of her books, with students playing parts using simple props. She also will visit with third- and fourth-grade students in smaller groups and share information about writing good stories. Bottle drive

DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Cemetery Restoration Committee will host a bottle drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in Dixfield. Citizens in town are requested to leave their bottles at curbside, and Kathy Martin will pick them up. Those who would like to donate but live out of town can take their bottles to Jeanne’s Bottle Baby Depot, Route 2, Mexico, by April 12 and the Cemetery Restoration Committee will receive the credit.

Garden seeds

RUMFORD – Garden seeds will be given out from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 11, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at the Rumford Grange Hall at Rumford Center.

Healthy meals

PERU – The Peru Extension Homemakers will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at the Peru School. The topic is Quick Healthy Meals. Virginia Viitala is the leader and Jane Peterson has the mystery. The lunch is potluck. For more information, people can call Esther Russell, 562-7710.

Coaches sought

PERU – The Peru Recreation meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at the Peru Grange Hall. Anyone interested in coaching or helping with the softball and baseball programs this summer is being asked to attend. People can contact Bill or Janna at 562-7814 for further information.

American Legion

RUMFORD – The American Legion Post 24 will have a special meeting at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 13, for nomination and election of officers. All members should try to attend. The club will be open at 12 p.m.

Caregivers seminar

RUMFORD – A seminar on “When You Take Care of Others” will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 14, at the SeniorsPlus Dining Center, 50 Congress St. This seminar, which is hosted by SeniorsPlus, is free to those who provide care to seniors who can no longer care for themselves.

In the seminar’s first part, David Ditmer of Legal Services for the Elderly will discuss legal issues such as telephone scams, power of attorney and MaineCare estate recovery. The second part, on caregiver support services, will be given by Donna Courchesney, caregiver specialist at SeniorsPlus. The third part will be by Pam Averill, an Alzheimer’s specialist with SeniorsPlus, who will discuss memory loss, how to recognize dementia and Alzheimer’s disease symptoms, plus resources for information and assistance.

The seminar is free and open to the public. People can call Kim Chiasson at 364-3572 for more information. Participants are welcome to have lunch at the dining center before the seminar. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. For those 60 and over, their spouses and people with disabilities, a donation of $2.50 is suggested for the meal. For all other diners, the meal is $4. Reservations for the meal are encouraged.

Easter sunrise

MEXICO – There will be an Easter sunrise service at 6 a.m. Sunday, April 20, at the Mountain Valley Middle School parking lot on Highland Terrace. Area churches sponsor this annual tradition. The service will be followed by a light breakfast for participants at the Rumford United Methodist Church on Linnell Street in Rumford. In the event of foul weather, the service will be moved to an indoor location and a sign will be posted at the parking lot, indicating that location.

Gymnasts’ meet

RUMFORD – The Greater Rumford Community Center Gymnastics team will host the YMCA State Gymnastics Championship at Mountain Valley High School April 26 and 27. This is the first time in at least 20 years that the Greater Rumford Community Center has sponsored this event. There will be approximately 45 gymnasts representing the Greater Rumford team and 250 gymnasts representing the state of Maine.

Hazmat exercise

RUMFORD – A hazardous material exercise will take place at Calpine Rumford Power on Industrial Road off Route 108 between 9 a.m. and noon Saturday, April 12. During this time, there will be many fire, rescue and police vehicles on Route 108 and Industrial Road. Industrial Road will be closed to traffic between 9 a.m. until around noon.
