LEWISTON — The cities of Lewiston and Auburn will conduct the annual spring clean-up beginning the week of April 14 for Lewiston residents and the week of April 21 for Auburn residents.

As during past efforts, the cities’ public works departments will dispatch work crews and equipment to collect and dispose of bulky waste items that are not collected during normal curbside trash collection.

Examples of such bulky waste items include scrap metal — stoves, washing machines and other metal appliances; wood — scrap wood from home remodeling; brush, shrubs and pruning waste from home landscaping; furniture — carpeting, sofas, chairs, tables, mattresses; other household items not normally collected due to size restrictions.

Waste materials that will not be accepted include automobile parts (including lawn mowers), liquids and volatile materials such as gasoline, oil, kerosene.

For more information, Lewiston and Auburn residents are encouraged to refer to a Sun Journal collection notice that will be published on April 12, 18, 26 and May 2.

Residents may assist with the efficiency and safety of the clean-up by observing the following procedures: do not place items at curbside until the weekend before the respective area is scheduled to be picked; separate weekly garbage and recyclables from the clean-up materials, which will be picked up by separate crews; limit the quantity of material placed at curbside to no more than one pick-up truck load a household; limit materials placed at curbside to no larger than two individuals can handle.

Lewiston residents may bring their clean-up refuse to the solid waste facility on River Road. Hours are from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Auburn residents may bring their waste, excluding brush and tires, to the Mid Maine Waste Action Corp. on Goldthwaite Road in Auburn, free of charge, from April 19 to May 10.

MMWAC’s operating hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
