Dear Sun Spots: I’m writing to see if any organization or large company or benevolence Grange either cooks a meal for shut-ins and ‘loners’ for Easter in the Strong/Phillips area? Thanks for the column. — No Name, No Town.
Answer: Perhaps readers can tell us of one in the Strong/Phillips area.
Here are two that serve other areas. There will be an Easter breakfast at the Spurrs Corner CMA Church on Route 121 in Otisfield on April 20 at 8 a.m. Aspects of Easter will be presented in the Sunday school rooms during this time. The Easter service will begin at 10 a.m.
In the Lewiston/Auburn area, Hope Haven Gospel Mission, 209 Lincoln St., Lewiston, (207) 783-6086, will serve and deliver Easter meals. Sun Spots spoke with Priscilla Demers, secretary, who says they serve lovely meals and even accommodate diabetics. The mission also provides meals for takeout. The lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Easter Sunday, April 20. Please call by April 18 to have a delivery set up.
Dear Sun Spots: This column has been so helpful to us in the past, so we are asking for your help once again. We have a great need for people in the Lewiston -Auburn area who would be willing to visit homebound, elderly people. The Senior Companion Program is sponsored by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and partners with Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice. Our volunteers provide companionship to combat loneliness and isolation for homebound elderly. This program provides meaningful, part-time, stipend opportunities for low income volunteers age 60 and over. If you are able to get out and about and want to make a difference in your life and the lives of homebound elderly, please call Anna Saar at (800) 287-1482. – Anna Saar, South Paris.
Dear Sun Spots: Could you please tell me where I can find Central Maine Power poles that they no longer need, at a reasonable price. I need six of them. I appreciate your help. – No Name, Sabattus.
Answer: According to Gail Rice at the CMP, the company occasionally has used utility poles available to the general public. Poles may be provided, for sale or at no cost, to other parties, provided the following conditions are met:
• The receiving party agrees to only use the pole in an environmentally acceptable manner and signs a Pole Transfer Agreement provided by CMP; and
• A Material Safety Data Sheet and Consumer Information sheet are given to and receipt acknowledged by the recipient.
Approved uses for recycled poles and other treated wood are those consistent with the original intended use of the pole or wood, such as installations as a vertical post or above ground placement, and when the usage is consistent with precautions listed in the Consumer Information Sheet. Pentachlorophenol poles should not be used in a manner in which they are in contact with the ground for their entire length, such as for parking curbs or landscaping timbers. They are also generally not suitable for home interiors; in places where they might come in direct contact with bare skin, domestic animals, or livestock; or near drinking water supplies. CMP’s Consumer Information sheet provides specific guidelines.
Someone wishing to acquire a used pole from CMP should call (800) 565-0121 and ask for the line supervisor at the Service Center closest to them. For example, customers in the Lewiston-Auburn area should ask for the Lewiston line supervisor. If a pole is available, the two parties can then make arrangements for completion of the paperwork and transfer of the pole.
Dear Sun Spots: I have been a registered nurse for more than 10 years. I love to buy my uniforms at Marlenes II Uniforms. They always have a great selection, ordering options and friendly customer service. Marlenes II used to be located on Main Street in Lewiston. I was recently shopping in the Lewiston-Auburn area and was unable to locate them. I didn’t know if they had changed names or something. I was wondering if you could please help me find where my favorite store is located? Thank you so much for your help. – K. Johnson, Arundel.
Answer: Marlenes II is now operating under the name Uniforms Express, 730 Center St. in Auburn, (207) 784-4962, next to T.J. Maxx. Marlenes II Uniforms Express is also located at 200 Gorham Road in South Portland, next to the Olive Garden, (207) 774-5500.
