CARTHAGE -A public dance will feature Rock Bottom, and Mike Mo and Tad at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Grange Hall. Live rock ‘n’ roll music from the ’70s through today’s music will be played. The dance is sponsored by the Webb River Grange. It’s $6 a person, or $10 a couple.

Baseball tryouts

DIXFIELD -The Recreation Committee will hold tryouts for Little League baseball at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at Marble Park. Any athlete who is 8 years old before Aug. 1 and not 13 before that date is eligible. Permission forms will be distributed at the field and in the schools. Forest cleanup

BETHEL -The White Mountain National Forest is inviting people to join in an Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 26, at the Evans Notch visitor center on Route 2. There will be craft activities – rain sticks and pine cone bird feeders – and a chance to decorate adorn the Pledge Tree with leafy promises to help the earth.

The central event will be a litter cleanup in the forest beginning at 10 a.m. People can pick up Woodsy Owl trash bags, gloves and Earth Day buttons at the visitor center. Kids should bring an adult and dress for the weather, including sturdy play shoes. Proceeds from returned bottles and cans will be donated to the Bethel Exchange.

All activities are free and open to all. The visitor center is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, people can call 824-2134.

MEXICO -The Mountain Valley WalkAmerica walk will begin at the Mexico Town Hall at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 27. Arrival time is 8:30 a.m. for the 6.5 mile walk. Local sponsors are Rumford Hospital and Franklin Savings Bank. The local contact is Darla Sanford, day 364-3738, evening 562-8735.

Auditions planned

MEXICO – The RAAPA will hold auditions at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, for two one-act plays being presented at Park Place on June 20-22. There are parts for 12 women and eight men. In “Kiss Me Quick I’m Double Parked” a young dentist is on his way to get married but a policeman, picketers, PTA members, a Con Edison man and a masked bandit impede his departure. In “Just Desserts” several members of a dysfunctional family meet for the reading of a wealthy relative’s will. Judith Kuhn will direct.

The 20 roles range from major leads to walk-on parts. Auditions will be in the lecture hall at Mountain Valley Middle School. Perusal scripts are available at the Rumford Public Library.

Seeking a slogan

RUMFORD -The River Valley Growth Council is looking for a new slogan or tag line to come after and expand on “River Valley.” The council wants a slogan that will help “brand” the region.

For example, Lewiston and Auburn are the “Cities of the Androscoggin” or Oxford Hills “has it all.” If people have suggestions, they are being asked to call Rosie at 369-0396, send them by e-mail to rosie@rvgc.org or send letters to River Valley Growth Council, 34 River St., Rumford, ME 04276. A committee will review them and pick the top five, which will then be voted on by the citizens in the communities. A $50 cash prize will be awarded to the person who suggested the winning entry. Entries are due by May 16.

MEXICO -The first rehearsal for the RAAPA Chorus will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Mountain Valley Middle School. Music to be performed includes “Mr. Bojangles,” “Elvira,” a Rodgers and Hammerstein medley, “Tomorrow” (from “Annie”) and “Hey! Look Me Over.”

Gallant to perform

DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Coffee House will host Jim Gallant from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Dixfield Congregational Church. Cost will be $5 at the door, children 12 years of age and under will be admitted free.

Driver course

MEXICO – The AARP 55 ALIVE Driver Safety Program will be held May 7 and 8 at Oxford Federal Credit Union.

The refresher course is geared especially to drivers 50 and older.

It is being conducted in the Joseph A. Poirier Training Room at the credit Union, 225 River Road in Mexico.

Drivers will meet from 8 a.m. to noon both days to complete the eight-hour course.

May 8 is AARP’s National Day of Service, and AARP service workers all over the world will be conducting courses and providing service to their members.

The course includes such topics as: how to adjust for changes in vision, hearing and reaction time; how to handle road challenges, aggressive drivers, and right of way; using new anti-lock brakes, air bags and safety belts; assessing your own and others’ driving abilities.

The course fee is $10, and graduates receive a certificate of completion.

In Maine, this certificate qualifies drivers for an automobile insurance discount and provides their insurance carrier with a certificate of completion.
