I don’t understand why Ms. Candy Gleason and Mike Simpson were so offended by the letter Dr. Thomas Shields sent to Mike (April 19). Assisted suicide is a very difficult topic. The doctor is very passionate about the subject and made it clear where he stands.

If you are going to ask a serious question, expect a serious answer. Don’t be alarmed if the response is not what you want to hear.

Mike is a high school senior who is going to work or college soon and I would expect more than, “wow, that wasn’t very nice.” He is not in the second grade and didn’t ask the legislator to plant a tree.

If he cares deeply about assisted suicide he should keep fighting passionately for it. However, he should be ready for others to be as passionate on the other side of the issue.
