The Lewiston Regional Technical Center (LRTC) chapter of SkillsUSA-VICA continues to be one of the most skilled groups in Maine. At the State Skills Championships held in March, 17 of the 29 LRTC contestants came home with medals. SkillsUSA-VICA is a national organization that serves students enrolled in technical and service training programs.

The Health Occupations Knowledge Bowl team, consisting of Lewiston High School (LHS) students Sara Tuttle, Meg Harris, Amanda McLean, and Kristina Fitzpatrick, earned four third-place bronze medals. Oak Hill High School student Danielle Ustach earned a bronze medal in Health Occupations Portfolio. Four students earned silver medals: Kyle Pilote, Poland Regional High School (PRHS), in Technical Drafting; Amy Laprell, Edward Little High School (ELHS), in Pre-School Teaching Assistant; Jason Roy, LHS, in Internetworking; and Matt Bennet, PRHS, in Customer Service.

Eight LRTC students earned gold medals and the opportunity to represent us at the National Leadership Conference and Skills Championships in Kansas City in June. Marissa Iadevaia-Jalbert, LHS, earned a gold medal in Courtesy Corps; Brandon Eaton, Oak Hill, earned a gold medal in Prepared Speech; Jenna Nicholas, ELHS, earned a gold medal in Job Skill Demonstration; Todd Perreault, LHS, earned a gold medal in Electronics Technology; Dan Bussell, Leavitt High School, earned a gold medal in Architectural Drafting; the team of Tom Stukas, Nate Deschaine, and Cory Worthington (all from LHS) earned three gold medals in Automated Manufacturing Technology.

The National Leadership Conference and Skills Championships will feature over 15,000 competitors from all fifty states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. Good luck to our state champions who compete in Kansas City!
