INDUSTRY – Police are investigating the theft of 27 streets signs from roads in the town. Replacement costs of the signs alone is estimated to be about $1,000.
“It’s a real hazard,” Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy Heidi Gould said. “It’s a huge liability.”
Medical emergency responders and law enforcement officers rely on streets signs in emergencies, Gould said.
Selectman Carolyn Eaton reported the missing streets signs on Thursday.
Gould said at least some of the streets signs were known to be up on Wednesday.
She said that signs are believed to have been stolen overnight.
Also stolen were wooden barricades – saw horses – the type used to mark hazardous spots such as damaged roads, Gould said.
The deputy said she is hoping someone will see the report of the missing signs and return them to the town or the Sheriff’s Department. Anyone with information is asked call Gould at 778-2680.
“It’s such a dangerous thing,” Gould said.
