FARMINGTON – Colonial Daughters Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, met recently with 15 members present and guests, Beth Hope, daughter of Nancy and Robert Flick; Leroy Gilbank, Robert Stevens, Richard Doyle and speaker Duluth Wing and wife, Betty, who contributed to a discussion of the history of the Arnold Trail.
Following the prayer and Pledge of Allegiance, Floriece Kennedy read the President General’s message on the subject of protestors.
Jan Stevens noted the death of Florence Jackson and it was voted to send cards, flowers and plants to Jean Syme, Alys Watson and Helen McLeod.
American Spirit, bimonthly magazine of NSDAR, won first place Masters Award in magazine category of 2003 American Society of Professional Communicators competition.
Connie Hiltz gave an Indian report that described the safety, closeness and convenience for Native American babies in their cradle boards while their mothers tended to family chores.
Loraine Norton gave a detailed account of the Louisiana Purchase. The secretary has copies of Norton’s source from the Smithsonian if anyone wishes to review the subject, also given coverage in the May-June American Spirit magazine.
Robert Flick read an original poem of admiration and appreciation for the many accomplishments of the DAR.
Theo Walker reported on two new members, Eleanor Campbell and Marie Lucarelli.
A Resolution Committee was appointed and includes Joy Gilbank, Theo Walker and Jan Stevens.
Nelda Doak relayed the need for two people to carry the DAR banner in the Wilton parade. It was also noted that there will be a celebration in Industry on June 20 and July 4.
The balance of the meeting was devoted to Duluth and Betty Wing and their history of the Arnold Trail. The Wings lived in Flagstaff until it was flooded. The secretary was given a folder with information on the area of the trail. Copies are available for a summer’s day excursion.
The next meeting will be held at Theo Walker’s home on May 27 with a light lunch planned at noon followed by annual reports, a memorial service for chapter members, election of officers and a program by Martha Hamilton on President’s Wives Tea.
