WILTON – The Maine Department of the American Legion has honored the Wilton CareerCenter as Employment Office of the Year and Barry Roberts, a CareerCenter employee, as Outstanding Local Veterans’ Employment Representative of the Year.

Both the Wilton CareerCenter and Roberts were nominated for their awards by Jon Guay, the state director of the Veterans’ Employment and Training Service under the U.S. Department of Labor.

“I monitor and evaluate all the CareerCenters in the state to ensure that they are providing priority service to veterans,” Guay said. “For the program year ending June 30, 2002, the Wilton CareerCenter, in partnership with the Rumford CareerCenter, achieved the highest percentage of veterans entering employment of all CareerCenters in Maine.”

Guay also cited the CareerCenter’s excellent reputation for fostering good relationships with community-based and veterans’ service organizations.

Roberts, a retired disabled veteran and a Local Veterans’ Employment Representative at the Wilton CareerCenter, was nominated for his outstanding job of serving veterans, as well as his positive attitude toward helping all customers, Guay said.

“I’m honored to receive this prestigious award, and I’m also very proud to be a part of the CareerCenter’s award,” said Roberts. “It gives me great satisfaction to know that I have helped the people who have served our country, and to be recognized by them is wonderful.”

Roberts was also named the CareerCenters of Central/Western Maine’s Employee of the Month for March by the Maine Department of Labor.

The American Legion’s Employment Service Awards were established in 1992 to recognize outstanding individuals and local offices within state employment service agencies for their service to veterans. The awards will be presented to the recipients during the American Legion’s annual convention on June 14.

Maine’s CareerCenters offer access to everything from vocational rehabilitation to youth programs, from veterans’ services to adult education. Job applicant needs and employer services are provided through the state’s CareerCenter system. Each office also has an Information Center that offers use of computers, a library, office equipment and telephones.

All services of the CareerCenters are available at no cost.
