LEWISTON – The Lewiston Housing Authority is taking applications for the Roger R. Berube Scholarships. The authority will award up to four grants of $1,000 each – two grants awarded to public housing residents and two awarded to Section recipients.

To be eligible an applicant must be a resident of public housing or a Section 8 recipient who is a high school graduate or holds a General Educational Development diploma who is already enrolled in an accredited college (or will be in the summer or fall), technical college, nursing school or any endeavor that would lead to a profession or a trade.

It can include non-academic courses such as hair styling or apprenticeship programs. The applicant need not be entering the freshman year, but can be anyone (teen or adult) affiliated with the Lewiston Housing Authority who is pursuing some form of formal education or training.

Completed applications must be received at the Lewiston Housing Authority by 5 p.m. June 16. Applications may be sent to either of the following two offices: Lewiston Housing Authority, 1 College St., Lewiston, ME 04240 or Hillview Resource Center, Lewiston Housing Authority, 77 Rideout Ave., Lewiston, ME 04240. Winners will be notified in July.

The awards are competitive and the winners will be chosen based on the information provided. Applicants need to prepare a complete, informative and presentable application. They are encouraged to contact Reta Herrick, housing services coordinator, 783-8539, for advice and technical assistance in preparing the application.

In the event that there are no acceptable applications from one program, the authority may award up to three grants to the other program.

The awards will be paid in two installments. The first installment of $500 will be paid upon receipt of proof of completion in good standing of the first semester and enrollment in the second semester.
