NEW VINEYARD – The new “Welcome to New Vineyard” signs have been erected in town as a continuation from New Vineyard’s 2002 bicentennial celebration. The town was established in 1791 and incorporated in 1802.
On May 3, Wayne “Buddy” Fletcher dug the holes with his machine and then with the help of Rodney Holbrook, Lewis, Robert and Matthew Holbrook and Edward Merrill, the signs were erected.
Another continuation from the bicentennial will be a plaque with the names of veterans that were in the Korean, Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars with spaces left for the current Gulf War II names.
Names of Korean War veterans are Charles, Duane and John Adams, Joseph Dunham, Lee Gray, Paul Heath, Roger Ladd, Frederick Leeman, Frank Look, Roger Parlin and Albert Wells.
Vietnam War: Wayne Atwood, Terry Dubay, Timothy Ellis, Gregory Hargreaves, Keith Howard, John Messeder Jr. and David Nile.
Persian Gulf War: Chad Dubay and Todd Hargreaves.
If names have been omitted, the public is asked to contact Dinah Kidd at 652-2301 or Carolee Merrill at 652-2254.
A short Memorial Day service will be given this year by the New Portland American Legion at the honor roll near the Smith Memorial Building from 10 to 10:15 a.m. Monday, May 26. Refreshments will be served and a new plaque will be given to the town. The public is invited to attend the patriotic ceremony.
