LEWISTON – The George A. Custer Post 7, Grand Army of the Republic, Lewiston Association, is changing its original format of conducting services at the Civil War Monument in Kennedy Park this year and will lead original Civil War services at noon on Friday, May 30, at the graveside of two Civil War veterans at Riverside Cemetery.
May 30 was the original date set by Gen. John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his general order No. 11 on May 5, 1868, for the purpose of strewing flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in the defense of their country during the late rebellion.
Services will be conducted at the gravesite of George Leland, Civil War, medal of honor, and Stephen Marinner, who died as a prisoner of war in the Ciil War.
The program will include singing of the “Star Spangled Banner” by the assembly; invocation, the Rev. Donald L. Miller, commander (ret.), U.S. Navy Chaplains; reading, “Gettysburg Address,” Lorna Jollymore; reading, Gen. Logan’s Order No. 11, Richard Giem, Post 22, American Legion; Civil War poem recitation, Richard Giem, Post 22, American Legion; Civil War commentary, Jerry DerBoghosian, USS Canberra Association; and “Taps.”
