PARIS – The 28th annual median iris and spring flower show will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 24, at Oxford Hills Junior High School, Pine Street, South Paris. Admission is free.

Meet authors

DENMARK – To celebrate the recent reprint of “Maine Life at the Turn of the Century Through the Photography of Nettie Cummings Maxim,” the Denmark Public Library invites the public to meet authors Diane and Jack Barnes from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 24. The library’s plant sale will also take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24. There will also be baked goods on sale as well as books sold by the bag. Donations of labeled plants can be dropped off at the library from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, May 23.

Sermon topic

WEST PARIS – The Rev. Joy Gasta will give the sermon on “Sacrifices We Make and Sacrifices Others Make for Us” at the 9 a.m. service Sunday, May 25, at the First Universalist Church.

OTISFIELD – The East Otisfield Free Baptist Church on the Rayville Road will hold a special service at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 25, when members will honor heroes, focusing not only on war veterans, military and their families, but also on firefighters, medical personell, police officer and teachers. American Legion posts in the area are invited to attend at 10 at which time the colors will be brought into the church, followed by selections by the choir, directed by Priscilla Delehanty.

Old home event

WEST PARIS – The West Paris Old Home Days Committee reports that plans are progressing for the annual event. Anyone interested in helping out or wanting information can call Betty Jones at 674-2507, Martha Roberts at 674-5878 or come to a meeting at 7 p.m. every Wednesday at the West Paris Town Office.

Clambake trip

PARIS – Members and friends of Oxford Hills AARP are planning a day trip on Thursday, Aug. 28, to the Cabbage Island Clambake near Boothbay Harbor. The meal includes fish chowder two lobsters, steamed clams, corn on the cob, onion, Maine potatoes, blueberry cake and beverage. Chicken can be substituted by requesting it at time of deposit. Cost is $64 plus tip for members and $66 plus tip for non members. The Cyr coach leaves the old Ames parking lot in Oxford at 9 a.m., returning at 6 p.m. Pickup will also be at the Ramada Inn in Lewiston at 8:30 a.m., returning at 6:30 p.m.

Reservations should be made soon by sending a $24 deposit to Walter Taft, 1024 Gore Road, Otisfield, ME 04270. Final payment is due Aug. 7. Reservations are also being taken for the Oct. 9 foliage day trip through the White Mountains.

LOVELL – Bill Fallon, author or “Courage to Persevere,” will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library. The public is invited to the free program. His autobiography documents his life as a man of the world who was faced with the ultimate challenge … the possibility of his own death, and the miraculous recovery that followed. Friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 10.

Grange celebration

WEST PARIS – West Paris Grange 298 recently noted Committee on Women’s Activities Night at the Grange hall. Potluck supper was served. Holding office were Jeanine Burnham, Yvonne Johnson, Peggy Blake, Sharon McAllister, Lillian Edwards, Maxine Roak, Betty Bragg, Nancy Dewing, Amy Andrews, Alice Hoyt, Marion Tripp, Bertha DeHaas, Marjorie Kimball, Dot Canwell, Lucile Robbins, Marion Morton, Jackie Stevens, Pam Brame, Elsie Haynes and Barbara Mahler.

Bridge results

NORWAY – Oxford Hills Duplicate bridge is now playing at Fare Share Commons, located at 447 Main St. There is ample parking in the municipal lot behind the building. Games are play at 9 a.m. on Fridays. All bridge players are welcome and a partner is guaranteed .
