PARIS – Memorial Day celebration plans are in the works at the Maine Veterans’ Home. The service, presented yearly, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, at the South Paris facility.
“We are always proud to bring honor to our veterans in this home and our community, but also to pay respect for those veterans who have given their lives for our precious freedoms. It seems more fitting than ever this year to take time to give thanks to veterans both here and overseas for maintaining the liberties of this land, and to remember the many who have lost lives fighting to maintain our freedoms,” states Pat Paar, activities supervisor for the facility.
Our program will include a color guard made up from members of Marine Corp. League and raising of the colors in the front courtyard. Keynote speaker will be Roland Knapp, Marine Corps League commandant for Maine.
An invocation will be given by the Rev. Melvin Young, and Pastor William Kerr from the Paris Hill Bible Church will lead the group in singing “God Bless America.” Richard Hamilton, past commander of VFW Post 9787, will do a reading of the poem “Memorial Day for Those Missing in Action.” Another reading, “General Logan’s Order 11” will be presented by Gil Turner, past commander of Legion Post 72.
Friends, families and community members are invited to attend. For more information, call 743-6300, or visit the Web site at www.maineveteranshomes.org. Refreshments will be served, and tours of the facility will be available.
