BELGRADE (AP) – The grandson of philanthropist Harold Alfond is proposing to build a $2.2-million hotel and restaurant on the Belgrade Lakes Golf Club.

Justin Alfond said he plans to build a two-story, 24-room lodge that will accommodate some of the 15,000 golfers who play the course each season.

Alfond said he hopes to capitalize on the golf course’s national recognition by adding a destination hotel akin to the Inn By the Sea in Cape Elizabeth or the Lodge at Moosehead Lake in Greenville. The go

He said the hotel should also help the local economy by keeping golfers in town who otherwise would stay someplace else.

“For the person that’s coming to Belgrade, spending six hours (golfing) and leaving because there’s no place to stay like what they could get on the coast, we’ve lost them,” Alfond said.

Alfond, 28, said it took about three years for him to convince his grandfather to offer land and support for the hotel. Harold Alfond is a longtime summer resident of Belgrade and the developer of the Belgrade Lakes Golf Club.

The younger Alfond will present his hotel plan to the town’s planning board on June 5.
