LEWISTON – The United Way of Androscoggin County has allocated $1,031,348 to help fund area nonprofit agency programs and services from its 2002-2003 fund-raising campaign.

“On behalf of the many people who benefit from the vital services of our member agencies, I wish to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank-you to the thousands of individuals and companies who generously contributed their financial and volunteer support to the United Way,” said Charles Johnson, president/CEO of the United Way of Androscoggin County.

“Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our fund-raising and allocations volunteers, our member agencies will continue to provide necessary and compassionate programs and services to those in need,” he said.

The United Way of Androscoggin County has adopted community building strategies that address specific targeted impact areas: caring for kids, supporting children and families, responding to crisis, keeping teens on track, maintaining health and safety, maintaining elder independence and increasing self-sufficiency.

These strategies include funding direct services, building collaboratives, advocacy, public education and research, and enhancing knowledge of the issues facing Androscoggin County.

The following provides a listing of the allocations to member agencies of the United Way who help address the strategies through various program and services:

Abused Women’s Advocacy Project, $59,000; Advocates for Children, $66,700; American Red Cross, United Valley Chapter, $81,278; Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care, $35,500.

Also, Boys and Girls Club of Auburn/Lewiston, $36,000; Catholic Charities Maine, $38,000; Child Health Center, $71,000; Common Ties Mental Health Coalition, $35,000; Community Concepts, $14,000; Community Dental, Auburn, $45,000.

Also, Girl Scouts, Kennebec Council, $3,200; Good Shepherd Food Bank, $5,000; Legal Services for the Elderly, $12,200; Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin, $28,200; Maine Housing and Building Materials Exchange, $1,670; New Beginnings shelter, $59,000.

Also, Pathways, $38,800; Prevention Works, $24,300; Rural Community Action Ministry, $66,000; St. Martin de Porres Residence, $7,000; Salvation Army, $10,000; Sandcastle Preschool Program Foundation, $45,000.

Also, SeniorsPlus, $53,500; Sexual Assault Crisis Center, $44,000; Tri-County Mental Health Services, $37,500; Trinity Jubilee Center, $8,500; Western Maine Community Action, $24,000; YMCA, $57,500; YWCA of Central Maine, $22,500.

Other allocated dollars include: $224,073 donor designated to specific United Way member agencies, $54,519 earmarked to other United Ways across the state, $45,853 designated to other nonprofit organizations that are not affiliated with the United Way of Androscoggin County and $15,677 designated from stated and federal campaigns.
