LEWISTON – The Androscoggin Land Trust will hold its annual meeting Wednesday, May 28, at Chase Hall Lounge, Bates College.
The business meeting will get under way at 6 p.m., followed by an illustrated lecture titled “Why Wetlands?” by Curtis Bohlen, assistant professor of environmental studies at Bates.
Wetlands were considered waste lands as recently as 50 years ago. They were routinely filled in for residential and commercial development and agriculture. Now they are regularly studied in school and efforts are made to save them. Bohlen’s talk will focus on what makes wetlands so important.
Bohlen is an ecologist with broad-ranging interests in environmental science and ecology. He holds degrees in biology from Stanford University and a PhD in ecology from Cornell. He has worked as a member of U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley’s staff on a variety of environmental and scientific issues, was a staff scientist for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and focused on wetland policy and ecological economics while working for the University of Maryland System’s Center for Estuarine and Environmental Studies.
The public is invited to attend Bohlens presentation. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 782-2302.
