Speakers urge attendees to remember veterans and their loved ones.
NEWRY – Rodney Hanscom, chaplain for the Jackson-Silver American Legion Post, opened Sunday’s Memorial Day observance with somber words.
“With our minds at issue we offer our own private prayers for those who have died for their country and for those who have survived. Memorial Day is a day to remember and honor all those who have served. Today, we must show our thanks and love for those men and women who have given their lives for their country.”
Keynote speaker Delmar McMillian echoed Hanscom’s theme, but he also reminded people that Memorial Day is not just for veterans, but is a day to remember civilians who have gone before us as well.
“Memorial Day is not just for veterans because veterans have their day,” said McMillin.
“It is also a civilian Memorial Day. It is a day to pay homage and remember our grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and all family members who have gone before us. Go to your local cemeteries and make sure the graves of your loved ones are taken care of and pause for a moment to remember them.”
As 25 people looked on, prayers were offered by Hanscom, the colors were presented by a color guard from the Jackson-Silver American Legion Post in Locke Mills and a firing squad from the Post gave a 21-gun salute in honor of our fallen heroes. Also, a wreath was placed on the town’s War Memorial and taps was played.
Prior to the service, visitors gathered for coffee and donuts and for a time to talk of their own personal memories regarding departed comrades and loved ones who have died.
