RUMFORD – Details of the development plans for Black Mountain will be unveiled to the public Wednesday by the new owner, Andy Shepard, director of the Maine Winter Sports Center.
Shepard will explain those plans and answer questions on how the mountain will be developed over the next six months at a special informational meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the auditorium of the Municipal Building.
At a press conference held earlier this month, Shepard said the MWSC aims to help develop a new generation of skiers.
That plan, however, will depend upon lots of community support and volunteerism.
Early announcements stated that the vertical drop will be doubled, a chair lift installed, and a new beginner Alpine ski area developed, among the many developments planned for the 40-year-old recreational facility.
The MWSC purchased the mountain from the Greater Rumford Community Center nearly a month ago with funds provided by the Libra Foundation.
Shepard has sealed several similar deals with small ski areas, mostly in northern Maine, over the past four years.
MWSC in based at the Loring Commerce Center in Limestone.
The goal of all the small, community ski areas is to re-establish skiing as a dominant winter lifestyle for youngsters and adults.
