PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Police on Saturday were investigating the fatal shooting of a Boston man, the city’s second shooting victim in as many days. Francisco Ortega, 19, died at 6:15 p.m. on Friday at Rhode Island Hospital, shortly after police responded to a report of a shooting in the Manton Heights housing project, according to Lt. Stephen Campbell. He’s the city’s seventh homicide victim this year and fourth fatal shooting victim this month.
Mayor David N. Cicilline, speaking outside the hospital Friday, called on the community to help stop the spread of illegal guns.
“I’m calling on parents, all the adults in our city, neighbors who know anything about guns, who see guns, who have any information, to get that information to the police in our city,” he said.
On Thursday, Arleides Tangarife, 23, of Pawtucket, died after apparently being shot several times while sitting in a car. Police found Tangarife’s body slumped over on the driver’s side of the car.
Police Chief Dean Esserman said investigators don’t think the shootings are related.
