AUBURN – Melinda Stewart of North Waterford received an award from Central Maine Technical College on May 14 as part of an awards luncheon at the Auburn campus recognizing students from area adult education programs.

As part of the articulation agreement recently signed between the Maine Adult Education Association and the Technical College System, CMTC asked area adult education programs to select a promising adult education student with plans to go on to college. Stewart was selected by Oxford Hills Adult Education, where she will be graduating in June, because it was the consensus of other adult education teachers that she demonstrated motivation, tenacity and self-reliance in focusing on her goal to continue her education despite difficult circumstances, and that she displayed an enthusiasm for learning and a willingness to share her insights with others. Awards were presented by CMTC President Dr. Scott Knapp and Walter Ridlon, CMTC’S liaison with adult e ducation programs in the region.

In the awards ceremony, Stewart received a certificate and a scholarship which will provide all tuition and fees for a course at CMTC next fall. Each student receiving an award was also given a packet to present to his or her favorite teacher.

Stewart, who has been part of the Oxford Hills Family Learning Program, stepped into

the audience to present the packet to her mother, Beverly, who has been “her first and

best teacher in her life.” Also attending the ceremony was Stewart’s daughter, Tianna, 18 months.

Stewart intends to go into CMTC’S program in graphic arts.
