KINGFIELD – The Franklin County Extension Homemakers spring meeting, titled “New Directions,” was held here with the Kingfield and Strong Extension as hosts.
Group representatives were Carolyn Balsam, Clearwater; Glennese Taylor, Kingfield; Dodi Thompson, Mt. Vernon; Susan Gill, North Chesterville; Erlane Dyke, Neighborhood; Polly Hennings, Red Schoolhouse; Anne Moody, Strong; Claudina Bechtel, Weld; Pat Blanchard, Weld Evening Extension.
The salute to the American flag was led by Claudina Bechtel of Weld, followed by the Homemakers Creed led by Caroline Mayo of East Wilton. The “New Directions” theme of Education, Learning, Growing, Sharing, Caring, followed through the meeting with the Franklin County Extension Homemakers president’s report given by Barbara Hathaway, who reported on the programs and progress of each group.
Ninety programs were reported covering food handling topics, nutrition, health, disease prevention, adult and family relationships, cultural and creative arts and seven programs on Maine. Sixty-one community service projects were carried out, providing benefits to the communities.
Workshop programs were voted on for 2004 and are: International Switzerland, Food/Mood Link, Choosing and Using Culinary Herbs, and Hand-crafted Lampshades. Fall workshops will be held to educate on these topics and programs will be provided by each group and are open to the public.
Shirley Hager, Cooperative Extension administrator, introduced Megan Burns, nutrition aide. Certificates were awarded to members from one year level to 70 by Julie Kosch, Extension advisor.
Three baskets of items were presented to Doris Cushman for use in the nutritional aides programs. Door prizes were drawn by numbers placed on each program. A buffet luncheon was prepared with donations from each group.
A video, “Extending Extension Into The Community,” was the program. The video was developed and produced by Barbara Hathaway and filmed at Mt. Blue Channel 11 Community Access with Director J.P. Fortier. Extension members participated in the filming. Hathaway was the hostess on the video and interviewed Vice President Claudina Bechtel, Secretary Sue Gill, Treasurer Caroline Mayo and Past State President Pam Dupont. The film will be used as a promotional aid to educate, promote the Extension experience and increase membership.
A new Weld Evening Extension group has been formed with encouragement from the Weld Day Extension, adding 15 new members to Extension. A challenge was given by Extension Homemakers President Hathaway to have each group add two new members for 2004.
