GREENE – Greene’s Conservation Commission sponsored an essay contest for grades five and six granting a full scholarship to attend the Maine Conservation School in Bryant Pond this summer.
The school, for more than 40 years, has introduced children and adults to a blend of outdoor fun, environmental education and practical outdoor skills.
Surrounded by lakes and diverse outdoor environments, the school combines fun and education in planned activities that include wildlife exploration and games, lake and pond discovery, kayaking and canoeing, swimming, fly casting, rifle instruction, map and compass, archery, hiking and first aid.
Participants were asked to write an essay by selecting a topic and presenting artwork to accompany their essay. The students from Greene were given five subjects to select from: endangered species, clean air, clean water, recycling and the Maine outdoors.
The commission selected as a winner fifth-grader Kelly Nutter, who chose recycling as her topic. She presented a creative poster by gluing on recyclable products.
Nutter will spend five days at the conservation school this summer.
