Children are encouraged to keep up their reading skills during a summer program at the library.
LEWISTON – Children are invited to register for the Lewiston Public Library’s summer reading game starting Thursday, June 19. The game lasts for eight weeks, ending Aug. 16.
On Friday, June 13, children can obtain free tickets to Scales and Tales, a Chewonki Foundation program to be offered from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, at the library. Four live reptiles will be presented up close, and children will learn to lose their fears and misconceptions about the creatures. Attendance is limited.
Any child from birth to age 12 can play the summer reading game. All they have to do is read two hours each week (or be read to in the case of the younger ones) and come into the library to collect their prizes.
This year the library will give away Sea Dogs tickets, Pizza Hut pizzas, Flagship Cinema tickets, toys, new paperback books and gift certificates for Mr. Paperback and Bullmoose Records.
The game is designed to encourage steady reading throughout the summer. Educators have found that children who don’t read during the summer sometimes lose as much as one year’s progress in reading skills. Just a small amount of reading each day can ensure that they enter the next grade with a leg up.
On July 10 Rhythm Inlet will present “A World of Drums,” a hands-on drumming experience for children of all ages. As with Chewonki’s Scales and Tales, attendance is limited. Tickets will be available on July 1.
The Children’s Room is looking for volunteers ages 12 to 18 to help with summer activities. No experience is necessary.
