PARIS – Reading is Fundamental has had another successful year in SAD 17. Through its RIF read-a-thon 362 students raised $10,289.
Students met the challenge by reading hundreds of books. Eighty-eight ice cream social invitations were given out to students who raised more than $50. Last year the invitations totaled 74. RIF provided more than 2,000 students, grades kindergarten to three with three books again this year.
The RIF program has been in the Oxford Hills district for 24 years. McDonald’s has been sponsoring the program for at least 20 years, and also provides some prizes.
The district results of the read-a-thon were: first, Dakota Wendell; second, Austin Chute; and third, Mikko Liimatta.
Grades four to six top readers: first, Liz Baumhoff; second, JaLise Cotton; third, Chelsea Gilbert.

Other community organizations have supported the RIF program through donations. In the fall RIF received a $250 donation from Kiwanis’ and this spring Wal-Mart awarded RIF with a literacy grant of $1,000.
The RIF volunteers are devoted individuals who support reading. Each school has their own RIF representative and they are: Dawn Mann, Darlene Rogers, Susan Harvey, Roxanne Mayberry, Deb Gajewski, Pat Brennan, Shelley Weiss, Peggy Busa, Dorene Vail and Terra Fillebrown.
