DAR speaker
AUBURN – Mary Dillingham Chapter, DAR, will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Rolandeau’s Restaurant. Guest speaker will be Past State Regent Susie Tukey. Prospective members are invited.
Seniors dinner
AUBURN – The New Auburn Seniors will have a chicken pot pie dinner at noon Wednesday, June 18, at the St. Louis Church hall. Cost is $3, and it is for members only. Tickets must be purchased by Wednesday, June 11.
At a meeting on June 4 members who had June birthdays were honored and received a small gift. New members welcomed were Romeo and Helen Lepage and Joyce Landry. Pot of gold winners were Rita Morin, Louise Cormier, Doris Biron and Jeannette Beaudoin. A light lunch was served and bingo followed.
The June 18 dinner will be the last one until September so the kitchen crew can have the summer off.
OES visitation
AUBURN – Pine Cone Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at the Masonic Hall, 1021 Turner St. Josephine Dupal, deputy grand matron of District 4, will conduct the official visitation.
Robert Ferguson, past patron of Ruth Chapter 14, Springvale, and chairwoman of the board of governors for the 32nd Degree Masonic Learning Center for Children in Portland, will discuss the center and receive items the chapter has collected.
All Eastern Star members are welcome. Refreshments will be served in the dining hall after the meeting.
Grange to elect
AUBURN – Members of Danville Junction Grange 65 will dine at the Village Inn at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 12. For reservations call Glenys Ryder at 783-6897. Members will hold a 7:30 business meeting and election of officers at the grange hall. All members and guests are welcome.
Burnt Meadow
BOWDOIN – Regent Jayne Bickford announces that the Burnt Meadow Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the home of Marion Spear. Following the business meeting, a video, “Air Force Once,” will be viewed.
Jam session
LEWISTON – The Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance will sponsor an informal Writers’ Jam Session from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at the Mr. Paperback Cafe, Promenade Mall, Lisbon Street. VFW conclave
LEWISTON – VFW Post 9459 and Auxiliary of Lisbon will host the 83rd VFW Department Convention Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 13 to 15, at the Ramada Inn. Post 9459 will provide entertainment from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. The outgoing president is Holly Dube, a life member of the auxiliary. The incoming state commander is Rosemarie Lane, who is a life member of the post and the auxiliary. She will also be the first female state commander. For more information call 353-5291 after 3 p.m.
Herb garden
NEW GLOUCESTER – Herb garden design will be the theme of a workshop at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14. Topics will include garden layouts, functions and herb plants. Free plants will be distributed from the Shaker Village herb garden. Noted herbalist Betsey-Ann Golon will be the instructor. The cost is $40. Pre-registration is required.
Chair caning
NEW GLOUCESTER – A chair caning workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village. Fran Faulkner, longtime Shaker Village instructor, will teach the traditional seven-step method for handwoven chairs. Supplies will be provided. The cost is $30 a person. Pre-registration is required.
Volunteers sought
LEWISTON – As part of the Fourth of July Liberty Festival there will be a tribute to the United States of America with a display of all 50 state flags along the north side of the Longley Bridge during the fireworks.
Vicki D. Roy, volunteer coordinator of that part of the festivities, is seeking participants willing to hold a state flag for the duration of the fireworks.

Showing colors
DURHAM – Alfred “Shorty” Wheeler showed his patriotic colors while celebrating his 80th birthday during a party at the Amvets Hall in Durham recently. Wheeler and his wife, Alberta, of 59 years celebrated at an afternoon of music and dancing along with more than 200 friends and relatives. Volunteers from the Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn, where Wheeler does volunteer work, were also present.
Bridge play
LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club met on June 3 at the Multi-Purpose Center.
North/South winners in Flight A were: first, Anna Vitiello and Margaret Dunlop; second, Fred Letourneau and Martine Begert; Flight B, Doug and Betty Sise.
East/West winners in Flight A were: first, Patricia Garcia and David Lock; second, Mike Quinn and Luke Merry; Flight B, Connie Simpson and Alberta Turner. Another game will be held at the center on Tuesday, June 10. A partner is guaranteed.
The club also met June 4 at Schooner Estates in Auburn. North/South winners were: first, Mike Quinn and Paul Barber; second, Tom Dahlberg and David Wallace; third, Pat Quinn and Anna Vitiello.
