NORWAY – Driver inattention was blamed for a crash on Waterford Road Wednesday that sent one teen to the hospital.

Norway Police Officer Warren Ellsworth said Crystal R. Thurlow, 17, of Norway was heading east on Route 118 when she dropped a pair of glasses.

When she leaned over to retrieve them she crossed the center line and then saw an oncoming car when she looked up.

The other car, traveling west, was driven by Elaine F. Gartman, 71, of Orlando, Fla., Ellsworth said.

Gartman swung into Thurlow’s lane when she saw Thurlow coming at her and, according to Ellsworth, that is when Thurlow corrected to get back in her lane. Thurlow’s 1988 Pontiac was totalled in the crash and Gartman’s vehicle sustained $2,500 in damage.

Norway Fire Department arrived on the scene and Fire Chief Michael Mann called Paris Fire Department in to use its extrication tools.

He said Thurlow was stable, but the door was unable to be opened.

She was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital, but a spokesperson there was unable to talk about her condition because she is a minor.
