BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) – A dog rescued earlier this month after being stuck in an underground drain pipe for almost five days has died.

Kody, a basset hound-mastiff mix, was pulled from a pipe near the Hyannis wastewater treatment plant on July 9 after nearby residents heard his howls. He’d been missing since July 4.

Doctors believe Kody was hit by a car, then crawled into the pipe.

The dog suffered a broken pelvis, but his condition appeared to be improving as he was eating on his own and was moving around. But the 4-year-old dog developed bladder problems and his kidneys appeared to be failing, Michelle Fowler, daughter of owner Jerry Fowler, said in an e-mail to the Cape Cod Times. He died Tuesday afternoon.

“Everything was fine until earlier this morning,” Jerry Fowler said Tuesday. “They called and said he was having a hard time. Everything was just starting to shut down.”

Kody was freed after rescuers dug a 16-foot trench – as much as four feet deep in some places – and removed a section of outflow pipe where the dog was trapped.
