What will the future residents of Wilton, Maine discover about its townspeople fifty years from now? The answers will lie tucked away in a time capsule, scheduled to be buried by the town monument on Aug. 10 at 3 p.m.
“The bicentennial time capsule will be placed opposite another time capsule buried earlier,” says Shannon Smith, festival coordinator. Smith, along with Kent Wiles of Wile Funeral Home, is overseeing the time capsule project and is still collecting items until Aug. 3.
“Anyone interested in contributing to the time capsule can drop their items at Mario’s, the Wilton Town Office or Wiles Funeral Home,” Smith explains. Call 778-4726 for pickup
Items should be reflective of 2003 and must be no larger than a photo album. She adds that a committee will review donated items and decide which will be included in the capsule. Any items not used will be returned to the donating party so items must carry return information. Some items already slated for the capsule include Bicentennial items, the names of people who purchased Bicentennial gold coins, and business cards.
Wiles Funeral Home and Cremation Service and Family Bereavement Center has purchased the capsule with money raised by town taxes over the last five years. Wiles is responsible for burying the capsule, which will be marked with a stone engraved with the date of burial and date for retrieval in August 2053.
