NORWAY – Stephens Memorial Hospital and Maine Blood Center are holding what they call a vital blood drive on Wednesday.

It will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the hospital’s Harper Conference Center in the Ripley Medical Building, adjacent to the hospital.

“Blood is desperately needed this summer and so we are hopeful that the community will respond to assist us in reaching our goal of 100 donors,” said Tim Ingram, director of clinical diagnostics.

He said all the blood collected will be used in Maine.

According to the Maine Blood Center, blood supplies in Maine are critically low. The shortage is due in part to decreased donations, attributed to Mainers being on vacations, while the demand is always greater during the summer months.

Tracey Geary, director of development at the hospital, said an appointment to donate can be made by calling 743-5933, extension 432. She said walk-ins are welcome.

Each donor will also receive a complementary T-shirt.
