MEXICO – Soap Box Derby enthusiasts are hosting a rally Saturday and Sunday at the Wal-Mart parking lot.

The races begin at 9 a.m. both days.

Jim Radmore, a parent of daughters who have participated in Soap Box Derby rallies and sanctioned races, said the site was chosen because of the its high visibility.

The local group will have a table set up with brochures and other information on how to get involved with Soap Box Derby racing.

Follow-up sessions for those interested in participating in Soap Box races and rallies will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, and again Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Mexico Town Hall. Additional information will also be available from Radmore or John Blais or Les Bell.

A display featuring the cars raced by local champions, Felicia Bell, Masters 2003 District 10 Rally Champ, and Sarah Radmore, 2003 Southern Maine Super Stock Champ, will also be on hand.

Both girls competed in the 66th running of the All American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio this past summer.

Saturday’s race features a double elimination race followed by a single elimination race. Sunday will feature a double elimination race.

Elevated ramps following the natural down slope of the parking lot will be constructed for use as a racetrack for the young drivers. Half the cost of the materials needed to build the ramp was donated by Dexter Lumber in Mexico.
