BOSTON (AP) – Authorities have found 10 of the 11 Dominican stowaways who jumped ship in the Mystic River on Monday afternoon, officials say.
The last one has been sighted and officials expected to apprehend him, said Jim Michie, a spokesman with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Officials first became aware of the 11 stowaways on the scrap metal ship Starchaser on Sunday, Michie said. The Starchaser has a Filipino crew and was en route from the Dominican Republic to Everett, he said.
Customs and immigration officials came to an agreement with the crew of the Starchaser to keep the stowaways in a locked facility on board for the duration of their stay in port and return them to their homeland.
But on Monday, the men apparently broke the locks on their secured area and jumped overboard in the Mystic River between the Tobin and Alfred Street bridges, authorities said. The Coast Guard was unaware of any injuries to the stowaways.
