RUMFORD – About 30 World War II and Korean War area veterans have so far expressed interest in going to Washington in May to attend the dedication of the national World War II memorial.

And now, organizers of the trip have set up a committee and a special meeting to finalize plans. That meeting is set for noon Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall on Waldo Street.

Loretta Bard, a nurse at the Rumford veterans clinic, and Albert Paul, a WWII vet, launched the plan last month.

Bard works with veterans everyday, hears their stories and understands how important World War II is to area vets. She said she wanted to try to find a way for as many as possible to attend the dedication ceremony.

Among those expressing interest are several women veterans as well as spouses of some of the WWII vets.

A minimum of 54 must commit to the trip by October so the bus and accommodations can be confirmed. Plans are to use Cyr Bus line and the 4-H National Council Convention Center just outside the city.

“We’re inviting anyone interested to attend the Sept. 16 meeting,” said Bard.

The cost will be about $225 for the trip, and two nights’ accommodations. Meals will be extra.

Plans are for the bus to leave Auburn early May 28, attend the dedication on May 29, then return to Auburn the evening of May 30.

Those interested may phone Bard at 364-4098 or Paul at 364-8617.
