Jones sets record

NEWTON CENTRE, Mass. – Ricky Jones, 31, of Thomaston, set a new course record with a 6-under-par 64 at the Charles River Country Club Tuesday in leading Maine to a tie for second place in the USGA State Team Championship at the halfway point of the first day. He also broke the competitive course record of 65.

California tied a USGA Men’s State Team Championship mark with a 5-under 135 to take a 1-stroke lead over Maine, Massachusetts and Georgia.

The two lowest scores from each 3-player team count as the team score in this 54-hole championship.Jones and Scott DeWitt, of Portland, who shot 72, were the scorers for Maine. “I just played smart,” said Jones, the 2003 Maine State Amateur champion and an accounting manager for an engineering firm. “I left everything short and had uphill putts all day. A lot of it today was that the ball stops. If you threw at the pin, it stopped. That didn’t happen yesterday.”

Play was delayed 45 minutes because of course maintenance due to overnight rain.
