DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — A University of New Hampshire freshman died of cardiac arrest Thursday during crew practice, the school reported.

Nick Frid, 18, collapsed as he was running during practice, UNH President Anne Hart said. She ordered flags on campus to be flown at half-staff.

While crew is a club sport UNH officials said the health and safety standards are the same as for varsity sports, and Frid passed a physical exam in late June.

“Nick was just a great kid, and we are all devastated,” crew coach Pete Cathey said.

Frid was the son of Peter and Kathy Frid. Peter Frid is the chief executive officer and general manager of New Hampshire Public Television.
