DERRY, N.H. (AP) – Vandals have defaced the Robert Frost farmhouse with spray-painted slogans about the California recall election and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“And we’re about as far from California as you can get,” Police Sgt. Robert Smith said.
Police found swastikas and the slogans “Arnold is racist,” “no recall” and “Arnold is Nazi” along the southside of the farmhouse where Frost lived when he wrote some of his most famous poems.
Police said Friday afternoon they doubt there is a connection between the poet and the vandal’s slogans. But Smith said the words were painted in an area that would be clearly visible from Route 28.
The words apparently refer to allegations that Schwarzenegger told an interviewer he admired Hitler. The candidate also is accused of groping women on movie sets between 1975 and 2000.
Schwarzenegger said he can’t remember ever saying he admired Hitler and called the German dictator a “disgusting villain”. He has also apologized for any sexually offensive-behavior.
Police have made no arrests and have no suspects in the incident.
Frost lived in the farmhouse with his wife and four children from 1900 to 1909. It was designated a national historical landmark in 1977.
A stone wall on the property inspired the poem “Mending Wall.”
