RUMFORD – To celebrate Fire Prevention Week, the Rumford Fire Department will hold its second annual open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Residents will have a chance to inspect the newest equipment at the Fire Department, a 1991 ladder truck that just arrived from West Hartford, Conn. A temporary building to house the new truck will soon be built on a portion of the municipal parking lot at the rear of the fire station.

Deputy Chief Ben Byam said many other activities for both children and adults will be offered all day long, including visits by Smokey Bear and Sparky the Fire Dog.

Youngsters will have a chance to shoot at a target placed between the fire station and the Municipal Building with a fire hose or a fire extinguisher. And a poster contest focusing on drawing exits at children’s homes will be judged.

Local merchants have donated several door prizes. For children, fire hats and junior fire badges will be handed out, along with snacks for everyone.

Brochures on fire safety will be available and a video on fire prevention shown.

“We want people to meet the local firefighters,” said Byam of the open house.
