There was no electricity in the storage building.
LEWISTON – Fire engulfed an Adams Street storage facility Sunday night, destroying the building and the possessions that had been housed inside.
Firefighters from Lewiston, Auburn, Lisbon and Greene responded to the three-alarm fire a little after 9 p.m. Sunday. Flames had already fully engulfed the old building, sending thick black smoke into the air.
As firefighters struggled to get the flames under control in the pouring rain, Lewiston police closed Adams Street to traffic.
Onlookers were herded away from the area and across Bartlett Street but a nearby apartment building was not evacuated.
Small explosions rocked the burning building as the flames reached the cars, tires and gasoline that had been stored in some of the units.
No one was hurt.
All but four of the 26 storage units were destroyed, said Lewiston Fire Capt. Larry Morin. It took firefighters an hour-and-a-half to get the fire under control.
The building had been owned by two local businessmen, Morin said. The units were rented by people to store cars and other belongings.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
“There was no electricity in the building,” Morin said. “So I’ll let you take it from there.”
