PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) – The new leader of the state’s Episcopal diocese, whose selection triggered an international uproar because he is openly gay, has chosen a Portsmouth priest to serve as his second-in-command.
The Rev. Tim Rich, rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church, will serve alongside bishop-elect V. Gene Robinson starting in February.
Robinson is preparing to take over for Bishop Douglas Theuner, who is retiring. He was elected by New Hampshire Episcopalians in June and confirmed by a majority of clergy and lay delegates at a national convention in August.
Rich, who is married with two children, has known Robinson since being appointed to St. John’s seven years ago and will serve as the bishop’s ambassador.
“It’s a wonderful role,” Rich said. It’s also a challenging role as the Episcopal church deals with worldwide reaction to Robinson’s sexual orientation, including threats to divide the church.
“I have tremendous respect for this man; he’s an immensely gifted priest and so the opportunity to learn about ministry from him is a wonderful and rare opportunity,” Rich said.
Robinson said Rich has the knowledge, the talent and the sense of humor to work successfully in the ministry during these trying times. “I will count on his honesty. I’ll count on him for conflict-management skills” Robinson said.
In accepting the post of Canon to the Ordinary, Rich slides into the role occupied by Robinson before his election to bishop. In his new role, he will serve as part troubleshooter, part cheerleader to Episcopal churches throughout the state.
