ANDOVER, Mass. (AP) – Police say a construction worker was killed in an accident at a school construction site Wednesday afternoon.
Lt. Kevin Winters said the worker, a 23-year-old male, was killed at about 5 p.m. when the small front-loader he was operating fell through a second floor wall to the ground.
Winters said the worker was using the front loader to push debris from the second floor to the ground at the Greater Lawrence Technical High School. He says the school is in the process of a reconstruction project.
Police did not release the worker’s name pending the notification of next of kin.
The school’s superintendent-director, Frank S. Vacirca, said TLT Construction Corp. owned the site where the accident happened, and it was out of bounds to students, faculty and staff. The two-story building was being renovated for later use by the school in the last phase of a $51 million expansion and renovation project, he said.
“It was an unfortunate tragedy,” Vacirca said, adding that the school provided coffee and food to family members and counselors who came to the site.
A phone message left with TLT Construction Corp., based in Wakefield, was not immediately returned.
