WALES – Police are searching for vandals who knocked down more than 80 headstones in a Wales cemetery.

The caretaker of the Route 132 cemetery discovered the damage Thursday morning and called police immediately.

Maine State Police have been assigned to the case.

“It could be kids. It could be 20-year-olds,” said Trooper Matt Griffin.

Police assume that the vandalism occurred sometime between dusk on Wednesday and dawn on Thursday. Many of the stones that were knocked over were more than 100-years-old.

Griffin interviewed people who live in the area, but none of them recalled hearing anything unusual. The state trooper has also informed school officials at Wales Central School and Oak Hill High School about the incident, in case they overhear students talking about it.

“We get vandalism in cemeteries once in awhile,” Griffin said. “But I’ve never covered one this big.”

Anyone with information is being asked to call State Police at 1-800-482-0730.
